October 12 - Celebrate Adopt-a-Shelter Dog Month at the Second Annual Dogtober Fest and "Meet Your Match" Adoption event at Sam Johnson Park in Redmond on Saturday, October 23.

The theme of this year’s adoption event is "Sit. Stay. Love… Adopt a shelter dog." In keeping with that theme a sundry assortment of furry friends from the Humane Societies of the Ochocos and Redmond will be seeking the perfect owner. The long-legged gentle greyhounds from Homes for Hounds will be lounging around looking for suitable homes.

Prospective adopters will complete questionnaires to find a match with a canine buddy that fits their lifestyle. People adopting dogs at the event receive special gift bags with grooming specials donated by Linda’s Pet Grooming, coupons for boarding at For Paws Inn, dog training certificates and enter a drawing for a gift basket.

This year’s event features an "Introduction to Agility Obstacles" conducted by Brittney Holtorf. Holtorf shares her 12 years of expertise on starting dogs in the thrilling sport of agility. This is a great opportunity for dog owners who have watched agility dogs dash around a course leaping and bounding over obstacles who want to try agility out with their dogs. Holtorf will instruct first-time participants and their dogs on fun ways to safely introduce dogs to obstacles and encourage motivated behavior.

Spectators can ogle dogs competing in fun matches in agility, obedience, showmanship and Canine Good Citizen evaluations or bring their dogs along to compete. Fun contests and games like the "Biscuit Toss" will regale pooches and their owners. A Halloween costume contest will highlight the event for a howling good time.

Prizes are sponsored by Ruff Wear and Iams/Eukanuba. Jackie & Marshall Morton with their Crooked River Mobile Kitchen are catering tasty food.

The event is free. Registration for classes is $5 and $10 for the Canine Good Citizen Evaluation. Registration will be at 9:00am. Events start at 10am and run until finished.
